Here we are entering the Roman Forum. To our left we pass by the Temple of Antonius and Faustina, one of the best preserved monuments in the Roman Forum. It was built by Antonius when his beloved wife, Faustina, died.

There are deep grooves in the fluted columns which historians believe are due to an attempt in medieval times to tear down the temple. This was a pagan temple and so in later times, when Rome became more of a Christianized city, the people wanted to get rid of it. Either that, or they were trying to "quarry" the marble and use it to build something else. It was very common for the Romans to tear down and use stone, marble or other materials from one old building site to be used in a new site.

The huge columns are of cipollino marble, a highly decorative white marble veined with green, comes from Greece.

This is Anna, our excellent Italian guide, who gave us so many facts and figures, we had no idea where to leave them! She is a walking encyclopedia of information.
