The Trevi Fountain

It seems like every square in Rome sports a fountain. This particular fountain is quite famous. It is located at the juncture of three roads and marks the terminal point of one of the major aquaducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. The sculptures behind the fountain tell the story of how pure water was discovered some eight miles from the city. Because the aquaduct had to take a circuitous route, the length of it stretched to an actual fourteen miles. This is where the water came from for the Roman Baths.

I inserted this picture because of the interesting light that seems to be centered upon the crowd gathered around the fountain.

There is a saying that if a visitor to Rome throws a coin with his right hand over his left shoulder into the fountain, he will return to Rome! Apparently, Connie will one day return to Rome! I think Stan may be in the process of getting her picture here as she does so.

Further to the throwing of money into the fountain: some 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain every day and collected at night. This is roughly equivalent to $6,000 Cdn. The money is used to subsidize a supermarket for the needy people of Rome.
